In any case, the quality is much the same as with the Uncut sets. The revised background music that appeared along with some earlier home-video versions of the show is gone, presumably since Funimation decided that die-hard fans wouldn't be especially interested in hearing it anyway. It looks quite good – the colors are bright but not overpowering and the picture is free from artifacts or any very significant marks left over from the film masters – and it once again leads us to wonder why they couldn't have done it this way the first time.

This set restores the series to its original 4:3 TV aspect ratio, while also delivering a similarly clean remastered picture. For reasons never quite satisfactorily explained, the remastering process involved chopping the picture down into a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The last version of the series released by Funimation may have technically been 'Uncut,' as it said on the cover, but it wasn't uncropped. Score: 7 out of 10 Presentation and Video This is the main reason anyone's going to pick up the Dragon Box sets. These are the stories that made it a phenomenon, too – worth checking out, so long as you have more than a few hours to spare. (A later generation of fans, of course, would experience the same phenomenon with the animated versions of Shonen Jump strips like Bleach and Naruto.) Plenty of people don't have a problem with that at all, as evidenced by the fact that DBZ is something close to the most popular anime series of all time. It's more or less a direct adaptation of Akira Toriyama's manga, which you can read through at a breakneck pace in its original format, but on the screen it translates to hour after hour of drawn-out action. It's all fun stuff, providing you have the basic ability to enjoy a series made at a Shonen Jump pace. (Seriously.) Whether or not they consciously meant to at the time, the series' creators put together something exceptional there.

Likewise, there were never any more plot twists that matched the opening movements of the Future Trunks saga, and this set even features one of the show's most memorable random filler episodes – number 125, where Chichi forces Goku and Piccolo to go learn how to drive. A big pink goof like Buu can only seem so scary by comparison. After all, he was supposed to be the most powerful being in the universe, and he gave Goku and Vegeta a real personal reason to come after him. Dragon Ball dished up another couple of super-powered world-conquering villains after the Frieza storyline was over, but they never quite measured up by comparison.

When it comes to epic punch-ups and sudden surprises, this might well be the peak of the show, looking back on it. Just when it seems like Frieza's finally back … well, no point in giving it away to the two or three people who don't know already. A lot of classic moments show up along the way, from deaths to resurrections to one of the most surprising (and bizarrely funny) plot twists of the series.

It starts with the end of the Frieza saga (where Goku and the infamous alien conqueror, as mentioned, slug it out for the better part of a day in terms of running time) and continues into the beginning of the Trunks time-travel story (where Vegeta's kid comes back in time to avert the apocalypse and in the process negate his own existence). Box number three here straddles two major storylines.
